Studio clean up and new creepy crawlers

Chaos reigned in my studio until a couple of days ago.

Before... Truly an abomination... This was mid-clean so it actually wasn't this bad.

After! Hurraaaay!

This is what I've mostly been working on. Each little guy is a carved and painted woodblock. They each get cut out and I sand and paint the edges. I'm getting ready to send them all off to new homes.

See that box of pens in the corner? Literally not a single one works. I really need to just throw them all away. I've been noticing some weird hoarder tendencies in myself lately. Oh... and I found a dead, flattened cat under all the debris in my studio.

Haven't gotten to make much art lately. Sad but true. i was scrambling around trying to make some Christmas presents and was able to crank these little guys out. Fun. Still loving these little painted blocks. Wish i was able to get better photos (i want to create a sort of database) but my camera was having a sleepover. i can probably wrangle these all up again at some point though.

Just messing around really. i shaped laminated several pieces of wood together, shaped the skull using the grinder and some other tools, sanded the hell out of it on the bladder sander (love that name!) and then painted it. this was really just an experiment but i know it's leading up to something else. Looking forward to the next one already!

i left the biggest mess in my studio but i was exhausted by the time this was over. pretty happy with the results. i think i have a little more tweaking to do but the pressure is off for the most part.

Things have been extremely hectic here so I haven't been able to update the blog but I have been taking pictures along the way. My fellow printmaker Marcus Benavides http://www.marcusbenavides.net/ and I finally installed our show at the Overture Center here in Madison and I am currently working on my window installation. Haven't had a chance to get back up to the show with a decent camera but here are some pictures I took with my phone.

This is the beginnings of the window display. I have a few more finished pictures but I think I want to keep them under wraps until the big reveal. I'm very excited.

I was just walking around the art department and saw this. Sad and funny. I liked the simplicity in the form and message.

A few days ago I was feeling really traumatized so I had to buy this cupcake and eat it. Gotta love frosting with teeth marks in it! This was delicious, by the way.

i don't really feel like writing too much. it has been a busy couple of weeks. i have been documenting my process even if i haven't had time to post anything.

i really wanted to see them all laid out which required some reshuffling of my apartment. i reeeeaaally need to get these out of my house and up to school.

on an unrelated note, i've been setting up my studio at school. this is the wonder wall and who better to preside over it than Ron Perlman. He's my mascot.

so i'm almost done with this block. it took about a week. i could've shaved some time off that if i hadn't allowed myself to get distracted. what can i say, i'm taking advantage of my last weeks of summer.

Stained block, ready to carve. i still haven't resolved the hand. i'm saving it til the bitter end.

This half of the block is done. i ordinarily wouldn't have cut so much away but i think i'm going to do some hand coloring so there has to be a lot of white space.

Started the first set of blocks for the show today. it is a ginormous tattooed lady! i'm diggin' it. and when i say ginormous, i mean it. would not use that term lightly. she is almost eight feet tall! still have some issues to resolve (ie hands and ears!) i'm subconsciously putting them off to the very end. this piece is very much inspired by my summer in NY, but at the same time, a lot like the work i was making a few months ago. working at home, just until i get the image drawn out, and then i'll move to the studio.

in an effort to avoid cleaning my house, doing work or putting my stuff away, i am making a post. like i mentioned earlier, i had the most amazing summer and i have some more pictures to prove it. they're weird and random more than anything. i have a show going up on September 24th so there will definitely be some work happening very soon. should be happening right now actually. there will be art on this blog eventually....

i have been in transition lately and not able to make anything. hopefully this week. have to make a trip to home depot (in manhattan) first though. that should be an adventure. i will have to start small and buy some wood that i can carry very easily.

this picture was from about a week ago. we were just walking down the street and this poor little sock monkey was just laying on the street corner. who would do such a thing? this is the worst picture ever, by the way. it is like one giant pixel but i had to capture the carnage and i only had the camera on my phone.

i am resolved to take a ton of pictures this summer - hopefully no more decapitated sock monkeys.

This was actually a print that i had to make for a class... which was weird... because i do not do assignment based work anymore. She was not very impressed with my print, although i actually thought it was a great success. she doesn't like skulls i guess! it is based on these two photographs by Mexican photographer Lola Alvarez Bravo.

The title of this photograph is Tiburoneros, loosely translated as "the shark hunters," which inspired my bad ass woman shark hunter.

i then printed the block a million times and made all these stickers... while watching Law & Order: SVU!

This post will feature the work of several fledgling artists, working in Brooklyn, who shall remain nameless. The craze of woodblock printing has really caught on in this household, and i LOVE what they are coming up with! it is really fun for me to hear about their trials and tribulations. i only wish i was there to see it happen and offer up some helpful tips. Seems like they have a pretty good handle on it though.

some carved block shots... kind of a cool photo actually. reminds me of the view from an airplane.

i think this was actually just a sketch-off! wow, tough call. i think "uo" is the winner! The print that resulted from the sketch-off has to be one of my all time favorites! So simple but so great. AND even greater still because it is a bonafide potato print! Holy cow. Who even does that anymore?! i love it. Maybe i need to go back to basics and cut a potato.

Here is a working shot as well as the resultant image. Awesome! i would want this print in my house - it cracks me up! A first, we thought it was an M&M but we were gravely mistaken. it is actually an edamame bean that bears a striking resemblance to one of the other artists. A good likeness i think. When we thought it was an M&M, i was like, "why does that M&M have a mustache?!?!" Who cares. Why wouldn't it?! i love it. i am thrilled to know that this is the first print in a series of human-esque beans. Can't wait to see what this artist has up her sleeve.

Last but not least...

i like this print a lot and i admire the color choices! i'm actually afraid to print on black paper (is there a name for that phobia?) so i admire this artist's brave spirit. i think we all know how much i love nurses, so of course, i love this image.

Wowzer. i will refrain from any further commentary but i like that this artist is going for the jugular and tackling the tough issues. this week has been dumb - all work and no play for me! i haven't been able to do anything art related which makes me mad. like incredible hulk mad. SO since i have nothing art related to post, i am just posting some pictures i took this week.

i went to a big, beautiful suburban grocery store the other day and saw these chalks! i love them! i wanted to buy them but they were like $6 which i found shocking. i guess they DO have wiggle eyes though! so totally worth the $6. i am kicking myself right now.

i snapped this picture in the halls of the art department. what a cutie! i love a few lines and a few dots come together to make the coolest image. keepin' it simple - i like it!

We got a new press in the relief lab the other day - pretty exciting! Big mama. it required a bit of maneuvering to get it situated - i cannot even imagine trying to move a behemoth like this! Good thing we had the pros on hand to get the job done.

worked on this little print today. it's about 6"x9" or something like that. i am mostly just using this block to practice a relief technique that i have very little experience with, but i have actually grown to really like this image. this is called the "key block" and it will be the darkest color and the last block to be printed. it essentially ties everything together. i printed the first three colors today and hopefully i will have time to print a few more colors tomorrow.

this is kind of a silly picture but i felt like i needed to give people a sense of scale. it's funny, now that i'm consistently working on this scale, it seems small! ha. i will say that this was quite a difficult pose to hold! she looks really graceful, which is just fine seeing as how she's a figment of my imagination. she also looks like she could kick my ass! i printed this on really bright red paper and you can't really tell here, but it makes your eyes jitter. it's awesome. definitely want people's eyes to jitter when they look at my stuff.

that sounds way cooler than what i actually am on any given day, but today, i was a print maniac. here are a few shots. hopefully i can wrap it up tomorrow. day one was a disaster and today i had some problems but i fixed them (and was so proud.) in spite of all the problems i have a much better feel for printing on this scale and i certainly learned a lot about what not to do!!!! :)

i had to keep this one a secret so i couldn't post it! i don't have much to say except that i like this print. it was fun to make. it was good practice for me on a technical level. i also really like that fact that it is shaped. i'm really into that right now. it is weird and strange and i like it. i am actually trying to make my work even weirder lately. more interesting for me and also for the viewer i think.

easter eggy-ness

i had a really fun day today printing and carving on a new monster block. i got a lot done too! too bad i have to do stupid homework tomorrow... who am i kidding, i will probably just print instead! yay! since the block is so large (about 3 feet by 4 feet) i only pulled eight prints. i decided to do 4 different color schemes so i mixed up all these light colors (the first layer is the lightest color) and they looked like Easter candy eggy-ness!

they look a little more vibrant in person. the last time i printed a big block like this i used SO much ink so i mixed up a bunch of each of these colors but this time i had extra. the colors were so babyish and funny that i have decided to do a silly suite of easter prints. i might have to throw some bloodiness into the prints in some way to balance out the pastel explosion! mwahaha. i am really looking forward to those prints, but i'm getting ahead of myself.

the first layer of the big print. hopefully, i will be able to print the second layer tomorrow.

This was on the board in one of my classes today and i LOVE it so much. it was actually there a couple of weeks ago and i forgot to take a picture so i was pleasantly surprised to fnd that it was still there today. Phew! This is the kind of art i like!

This is the final version of the piece. As you can see, it is hanging. I think it's about 5ft by 8ft all said and done. I'm getting a lot of positive feedback which is always nice. Hopefully, I can post some better pictures soon. Someone else actually shot this picture.

The piece is called "peep show" because the viewer looks through the keyhole in the clown's mouth to see this (scary) print behind. I am actually really happy with this print. I tried a different method to kind of mix up my style and change up the line work. I think I have a really specific look to my woodcuts so this was kind of a nice experiment for me. I used sumi ink to paint this really loosey goosey inky drawing and then carved it out. Just a totally different feel. Needless to say, this is a dark one. Hey, I'm just expressing myself. Sometimes it's dark.

This was on the gallery floor at 11 o'clock at night. I was on my hands and knees ironing all the roses. By the way, all these pictures are courtesy of Blackberry, so just bear with me.

aka I haven't written on my blog in FOR-EV-ERRRR. So bad of me. It's not that I haven't been doing anything. I'm revamping the work that I make and doing some thinking, plus, I had no camera. Wah, wah, wah. I'll ease back into this with some pictures, and I'll plan to be a little more chatty next time. This is a big work weekend for me so that should get the ball rolling on this whole blog thing.

The initial drawing on the block. I think this block is 3.5 feet x 4.5 feet. Not sure, suffice it to say, it is quite large.

Then I stain the block so that once I start carving I can actually see what I'm doing.

Moved my table into the kitchen. It is now really really cramped in there, but I like it. Cozy. In order to move the table into the kitchen I had to take off all 4 legs! 20 screws and no screwdriver so I think I used a kitchen knife. You can see the difference between the stained wood and the carved wood in this image.

Printed this bad boy this morning. I had to have help because it is such a behemoth. It took about 3 hours from start to finish including clean up and everything, and I am BEAT. The printing was actually a lot easier than I expected. Looks pretty sweeeet.

This is a little human interest photo thrown in - this is why I get so much work done. Wisconsin is buried. It's pretty though.

This was something I started but have stopped. It's a little too much even for me - and that's saying something! Too much going on, plus, this wood is a different kind of wood that is a pain in the neck to carve.

It's been awhile...

This is the project I was working on before I left for Christmas. My camera finally kicked the bucket so posting on the blog went completely out the window for a few weeks. I am also regrouping on the work the I make so I kind of wanted to just stop making things altogether. There really wasn't much to take a pictures of.

I have always wanted to make a one page book, I tried once last year sort of just messing around, but it didn't really work out. Like a good printmaker, I forgot that when you print something you get the mirror image. Printmaking 101 and I failed. Here are a few images of the first try from awhile ago. You can't really tell from this image, but when you fold the book down, the back page is where the cover should be and the cover is on the back.

This book was a little dark... I think I was particularly disgruntled with work at the time! I was in a dark place. I was also just practicing my lithography.

At least I learned my lesson for this new book, taking all that into account. I was lucky enough to have really nice photographs taken of this book, so it looks extra good! It's a little story I made up based on true events.

I actually cropped out 3/4 of the print in this image. This is the only part I like! But it looks pretty sweet.

I am really blah right now. I was just reading another blog that I absolutely love (http://www.nonindigenouswoman.com/ by Kathryn Polk) and she said all work and no play makes her a dull person. I think that is my problem too. I need to carve some linoleum, but I have carved so much lately that I can't even stand to look at it. I think I'm just sick of everything I'm working on. I'll work through this - I'm less than a quarter into a giant coffee. Give it time.

This is that print I was working on a few weeks ago - It got so messed up that I just decided to experiment on it. I made a screen print to go over the relief printing. At this point I was really sick of this print so I just scribbled and did whatever I wanted so it's very loose. Still not crazy about it, but it's something.

Detail. I like this face and her robot eye.

I like this print - I guess. I was going to lay down one more color to make some areas pop, but I don't have the will. I can always go back.

Candy box

This is something I'm working on right now. I have had an idea for some type of candy box for a long time now (maybe a year?) but never really felt driven enough to put it into action. I still have a lot of work to do on it, but I like where it is going. I love working with this book cloth and I love the colors. I like the box a lot right now so I'm kind of not doing anything to it because I'm afraid to mess it up. I haven't exactly settled on what is going to be in there yet either so it appears that I am at a standstill.

On a totally unrelated note, this is a picture my camera took today! Crazy. It is a really old camera that has been dropped and vomited on and who knows what else, so I can't really blame it. I wish I could control when this happened but alas. It does what it wants when it wants. Kind of like me!

the printing continues

Today I printed the third color of this print. I chose to use this cherry red that I really love. It is so nice when what is in your head actually finds it's way into the work. I have two more colors to print on this image. I think the last two colors will really pull it all together.

This was a proof I pulled before starting on the real prints. At this point the block doesn't really have an image that can stand alone because so much of it has been carved away.

This is what the print looks like now with all three colors. Pretty sweet and it's only going to get better! I think this will turn out to be a pretty good print, but this process has been pretty intensive. I don't know if I can handle it all the time. Maybe it just feels that way since I am having to run an edition of 35 every time. Ten prints would probably be much more manageable.

AND... on a totally unrelated note... this is the candy box that I am working on. Coming along. I think I am really hesitant to continue working on it because I still haven't really thought it all the way through. I'm going to work on it some more this afternoon.

I have recently realized that some of the people I love most in the world don't really understand what I do. It's not for lack of trying, but I think sometimes printmaking can seem very mysterious. Right now I am working on a reduction for a print exchange, and in a effort to make the process more clear I have taken photos in several different stages. I only have two colors right now, which is not terribly exciting, but I will continue to post images as the print progresses.

This is the first stage of the plate. Since I am trying to create a background, not very much of the plate gets carved away and the ink used for this layer is the lightest color in the print. I wanted the whites of their eyes to stay white so I carved them away.

This is what the first run looks like... not very exciting... but it is for me.

After the first run is finished, I had to go and carve out everything on the plate that I want to stay that peachy color. For instance, I carved away most of their faces, hands, and legs because I want those to be fleshy looking.

This is what the print looks like after the first and second runs. With the second run I went in and tried to do some shading. This is the second lightest color in the print. The next runs will be brighter, bolder colors because less and less of the plate remains. The image is starting to take shape a little bit more. I was really trying not to outline everything, but the more I look at this image, the more outline-y it looks. Boo.

After the second run is completely finished, I carved away a lot more of the plate. At this point, the plate looks a little bizarre - the girls don't have mouths, all the hands are gone, etc. Tomorrow I will do the third run... exciting!

other stuff I'm working on

I'm still printing, but more and more I want to make things and build things. I have been making a lot of boxes. I've had this idea for a book that is a candy box for a long time, and I've tried to make it before but then it changed into something else. I also bought these skulls and skeleton masks at Micheal's and I have been messing around with them.

Then I went back to Micheal's and bought these candy molds because I thought I wanted to use them in the box, but I don't think they're quite right. BUT now I am obsessed with mold making! I bought a big tub of plaster and I am going to order some molds online. I am really excited about it.

I have a lot of things in the works right now. It would be nice to finish something!

big printing weekend ahead of me

This is one of the blocks I'm going to start printing. It's kind of scary! But I like it. I'm a little hesitant to start because I really like her but I'm not crazy about the little creatures she has by the hair. She is one style and they are something else... Hmmm. I don't think I feel like going back and rethinking the whole image so I'm just going to do it. I'm taking pictures in every stage of the process so it will be a little easier to comprehend. Even for printmakers, reductions can be really tricky to visualize.

This is just the drawing on the block with pencil and sharpie. I have only carved a little bit away.

This is the other block I am about to print. It is for an exchange portfolio. I loved this image when I first drew it, but now, I'm not as crazy about it. I'm sure I'll come around as the printing progresses.

This print truly is teeny tiny - 2.5" x 3" maybe. Just messing around. I just started drawing a new block last night using the same sort of dead eyes that are in this print. The new block actually freaked me out a little bit. The woman figure looks like a total psychopath... like me? Some would argue that.

I must admit, I am pretty happy with this one although up close the ink is a little funky. It is a 4 color reduction. It has been years since I've done one of these. I love printmaking, but I am also really afraid of it. It requires patience and organization which are not my strong suits. I really love this skeleton woman. She is beautiful but also kind of sinister.

What I did this weekend...

I have been working on a new book project. Finally able to get started on something. There is still a lot to do, but I haven't exactly figured out what that is... the idea started because I really wanted to make this box shaped like a hand. I took photos of all the different stages of the development of this idea. Building the box was actually a lot of work. I knew it would be. At least it looks great now. I covered a bigger box in book cloth and had to rip it all off and then the box was all messed up. Very frustrating, but I guess that's just the name of the game. All in all, I accomplished a fair amount.

This was stage one - This is kind of a recurring image for me. Just wanted to get the general idea out.

Then I built a lame paper version just as sort of a dry run.

Then after a lot of cutting and gluing and watching Law & Order I have my beautiful box.

I want to do more painting on the hand, but I haven't really resolved anything yet and I am really nervous about ruining the box so no false moves.

Here is the poor box that I raped and pillaged. I'll use it for something else, but I did put a lot of time into making it so that stinks.

I've also been working on some small multi color relief prints. I will go print the third color of this tomorrow morning. It will be four colors in total. I will post an image of it when all is said and done. She's kind of freaky with her big eye, but I like this image.

I just printed all these plates today. They are all really different. I like parts of each print, but I don't like a single one of them as a whole. Still working through some stuff. I guess it has been awhile since I carved or printed a block. I have the prints sitting next to me. They smell nice. I love the smell of the ink.

This was my first letterpress print, although there wasn't enough pressure so it didn't have that beautiful embossed look. Next time. I like this girl - she has issues. I think she's going to come up again in another print.

My brother visited me a few weeks ago, and a big thing on my to-do list was to go see the Barneys window display. More stop motion

I am continuing to play around with stop motion - still pretty low down on the learning curve. I will say that I was very inspired by the "gummi breakfast" candy that appears in this "film." I was determined to work it into the story line. Thank you dollar store.

Haha. I just watched it. It's ridiculous. I need to stop the camera from moving - it really takes away from everything else. I put it on a box, but apparently, the box had some give because every single shot is different. Gah! Oh well. Now I know. I need to figure out a way for the figures to have actual moveable bodies. I glued all these little heads to match sticks so I could stick them in the clay and not have to worry about the faces. The faces are great. She has blue eyeshadow which really adds a certain something in my opinion.

Foray into the world of stop motion

The other night I was just messing around - haven't been doing much printmaking lately - and I decided to make my very own stop motion video. Very rough but there's something kind of charming about it. The plot is fairly simple and cliche, it was more of an experiment than anything. I have tried to make a few since this but just can't get started again. I think I'm thinking about it too much now, trying to think of the perfect plot and characters etc. I just made this one up as I went along so maybe I will try to do that again.

I clearly got tired and lazy with the conclusion because it ends quite abruptly. Stop motion is very tedious and requires patience... not one of my strong suits.

New big linoleum blocks

This is a work in progress. Finally tackling the three large linoleum blocks. I want to hand color some of them after they're printed. I'm still drawing out the block. I feel like I'm carving too much away. Not enough blackness. Still sorting that out. I think I need to finish sketching it out before I carve away much more. I'm taking pictures of it in all the different stages and then I want to make it into a little video - see the progress. For some reason that is so very satisfying. My ideas on what this work is about keep changing. I'm trying not to put too many ideas into it.

I was a little pressed for time, so I decided to shake things up and do a screen print instead of a linocut. Water-based ink sometimes makes things so much easier. Oil based inks are great, but sometimes they stress me out because they take time to dry and because I usually make a huge mess.

I really love some of the figures in this print. Their faces! I just want to chew on them. So cute. I have become so much more comfortable with my drawing ability so I think I'm much more willing to work outside relief printing. I used to need my drawings to be filtered through the carving in order for me to like them.

I love hand coloring so much. I wish I could do it on every print in the edition, but that would've killed me. I like the immediacy of hand coloring because print is very process driven with steps and all that junk. The print is 8" x 20" and folds down to 8" x 10" so the front is screenprinted to sort of frame the image and set the viewer up for a little peekaboo. Not that what is underneath is at all shocking. I like viewer interaction. Something I want to keep working on.

I'm freezing to death in Starbucks trying to write this blog post. I'd rather be sweating.

I went to Coney Island this past weekend with my friend. It was very inspiring. Colorful in every possible sense of the word. I have never seen such interesting people. That said, after about an hour, I was ready to get the hell out of there.

I LOVE this face. So retro. I also love that this ride is called "The Tickler." Heehee. I want to do something circus-y with my work but that has kind of been done. My work is kind of an extravaganza in its own right. I'm a more is more kind of girl. I'm stealing that phrase from my book arts teacher Miriam Schaer. It is so appropriate.

I have absolutely no idea why, but I like this balloon game and I think I may do something with that in a print...? Sometimes I just see something a love it for no good reason. I think I like how colorful and old fashioned this looks. Again, no good reason.

I made all this stuff for an exchange print, so I made exactly 15 and sent them out. I didn't even make one to keep for myself. I was so burnt out on this project that I couldn't even look at this stuff for a couple weeks. I went back and watercolored and collaged it into something else. Since this was a one off and just for me, I put it together with very little regard for the construction. It was refreshing. I used tape and whatever else I could get my hands on. It was so nice to not have to worry about precise construction.

I love the watercoloring. Too much work for an entire edition, but for my copy, it's great.

I am so sick of cutting and gluing. I need a break from tedious, fiddly things. I'm hating everything I'm making right now so I think I really need to change it up. I need to make something gigantic. From one extreme to the other - that's me. I do have three, 2 foot by 3 foot linoleum blocks at my house just waiting to be carved. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and start working on them. They have been sitting on my floor for the past 2 months - blank. It might be interesting for me to put them together and carve all 3 because I did that exact same thing exactly a year ago. A lot has changed since then! I also need to make two new prints for an exchange, so maybe I'll just make an old fashioned 2D print. Go back to my roots. No scissors, no glue.

This was a little book I editioned for my last day of class here at Pratt. It is like a teeny tiny book to go with those yellow book boxes I made a couple months ago. People really wanted to know the stories behind the titles so this book was more about that. The cockroach creeps me out - it looks seriously demented. It also makes me laugh because it is kind of pathetic looking. The "blanket" makes me think of Michael Jackson's son. Poor Blanket.

Ugh. This thing was a nightmare and I was really disappointed with it, but hey, what are you gonna do. Here is just the pop up bit of it. I didn't have five minutes to take a picture of the thing when it was all said and done because I just wanted to send it out and never see it again. That's why there's no final picture. I have all the bits, so maybe I'll make one for myself and try to improve upon it. I loved all the pieces of it separately, but together they were a disaster.

I went on a field trip today with my class, and afterwards we went to the beach. There were hundreds and hundreds of ladybugs. I found it to be very bizarre and beautiful. I know nothing about the beach, so maybe there is a reason why they are there, but I don't know it. You can bet that this will be in a print.

My house smells like ink - I love that smell, but I was worried I might succumb to the fumes in the night. Clean up took awhile because ink is so damn ubiquitous - you get a tiny smear of it on your foot and suddenly it is everywhere! Gaaah.

This is for a print exchange, edition size 15. Naturally, I made exactly 15 of everything, which is a recipe for disaster. It always helps to have extras. This is a theme in my life and my work - I always do things to sabotage and spite myself but then I never do anything to change that....? That's bad. I'm a glutton for punishment I guess. On the other hand, I am trying to embrace a slightly messier aesthetic with my work because that is more honest for me.

Big Damn Prints at Pratt

Yesterday at Pratt a bunch of people printed 4' x 8' woodblock prints. I didn't carve a block but I came and helped. Dennis rented a steamroller and they printed pretty much the whole day. It was a ton of people helping each other and working together. That is one of the things I love so much about printmaking. It is such a community activity - so different than any other type of art making. I was having a crappy day, and then I came to the event and had a great time. I am such a lover of prints - I don't think that will ever change. I'm never going to change horses midstream and become a painter. That would be pretty tame after printmaking.

Pratt Institute is so lucky to have Dennis McNett! He is an amazing printmaker.

The guys driving the steamroller made me laugh. They looked so bored. A collision of worlds - the real one with the art school one. Ha.

Here are some of the stages of printing for one particular block. For anyone who knows me, it should be pretty obvious why this one is my favorite. This is not Dennis' print, although it had me fooled. This print was done by an undergrad printmaker here at Pratt named Logan. The undergrads here are SO talented - I love to see their work. This is one bad ass print!!! I love it.

My first pop up print. The deadline is drawing closer but I think I can pull this off. I'm using text again for the first time in a LONG time, and I think I like it. It is helping to convey the narrative, and yet I think it leaves a lot to the imagination. People are free to create their own nightmare. They definitely don't need to know about mine! Right now, my method is to make all the bits and pieces and then pull them together - I don't really have the patience to do any more planning than that. Hopefully it won't look like a fifth grade art project. That's my usual aesthetic.

Michelin man commercial

I was just trying to watch that disturbing "saddest road" commercial, and now I can't find it anywhere!!! That makes me the saddest. I wonder why they took it down? Maybe because it was a really messed up commercial. Still, don't take it down! I did however find a few stills from the video which are equal parts amusing and disturbing.

Really, Michelin??? That's some scary @#$%! I don't know why I react so strongly to this commercial but I do. Boobs on TV, fine. Sex on TV, whatever. The F word, no problem. But maiming little animals is where I draw the line. Geez.

new book work

I made these new books with several things in mind. a) I really wanted to silkscreen on book cloth (mission accomplished) b) I'm still obsessed with the idea of finger puppets, tunnel books, dioramas, watercolors etc. Hey, at least I'm consistent. Each book tells a little story about things that have happened to me here in NY. They may or may not be apparent to the viewer, but I think you'll get something out of it either way. For instance, I woke up one day, swung my feet over the edge of the bed and there was this giant cockroach sprawled on its back right between my feet. I went to scoop it up and dispose of it and it came back to life. Eeee. I was trying to get ready to go to work and I just put a glass with a weight over it in the hopes that it would die, but alas... Long long story short it lived in my apartment, next to my bed, for three days while I decided how to deal with it. Every time I thought I had figured out what to do someone would say "NO! Don't squish it, it will squirt eggs everywhere" or "NO! Don't kill it! When you kill a cockroach, more will smell it and come to the same spot no matter how much you clean." Everyone had to put in their two cents, and it was all very unhelpful. I ended up getting really stressed out about the whole situation and I would sit in class during the day and wonder what was happening back at my house... did it get out? did it die? it is laying eggs? Finally, I scooted it all the way to the garbage can outside my house on a piece of cardboard and sacrificed the glass that it had been living in. I felt so relieved when it was gone and I cleaned that bit of floor over and over. I was talking to someone on the phone later that night and they were like, "oh no, why did you throw it in YOUR garbage can? you should have walked it down the block or something. it's totally going to come back." #$%@ All in all, it was pretty funny that this cockroach became my "pet" and living companion and terrorized me for a few days. There is so much lore surrounding cockroaches - I think I'll make a print about it at some point. SO.... that is the whole back story on that particular book, although none of that is readily apparent. Oh well, now you know.

MTA subway art is so inspirational!

I rode the subway up to Harlem the other day, which is a fairly serious time commitment, BUT on the plus side, I discovered a really amazing artist thanks to the MTA subway art posters that they put up in some of the cars. This is the second artist I have discovered thanks to public transportation. Her name is Andrea Deszo, and I think I like her work because it is very folk art-y, colorful, and playful. I went to her website and she also has a really cool stop motion film as well as a series of tunnel books which I absolutely love. Her work is part of an exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design, which I will be going to this week. Can't wait!!

I love these little prints. I am working on developing some new figures and pushing them a little farther in the "scary" direction. I feel like my work has been teetering on the edge of cute/ creepy for awhile, and for right now, I am pushing harder in the creepy direction. More interesting. I am just working with faces and expressions etc. They are hand colored with watercolors.

For this series, I wanted the figures to be caught in the act, so to speak. They have all sort of been startled in the middle of doing something, and the viewer is sort of this voyeur looking in on them. I like the idea of a peep hole or knot hole. I feel like this is something I want to continue with also... We'll see.

I've been working on some small book projects, and even though I'm going in a totally different direction now, I can't help but love some of these little prints! I had the idea of making finger puppets (but in 2D) so not only did I make the puppets, but I also made the fingers. Creepy, yes, but awfully fun for me! I think I'm going to keep going with the fingers and puppets. Not exactly sure why I'm making them, but I'm really into it so I'm just gonna keep on truckin'. Something will come of it. Art is no fun if you can't indulge in pointless art making from time to time. I think there is a point to these, I just don't have my shpeal down yet.

One of the puppets is a bodega bag! I am on a crusade against excess packaging. I'm borderline psychotic when it comes to this subject. Please don't get me started... I want to actually do a teeny book or print called"revenge of the bodega bag." You can imagine what it will look like. The bodega bag goes crazy and kills everyone. Just kidding! But I like the idea of the bag going postal. That is funny to me.

one page book

I have gotten really into book arts this semester. I think the size and format works really well for the work that I am making right now. I just recently made this one page book using stone lithography. I wanted to do a quick little something that didn't take a lot of time or have a really deep meaning because this is all just one big experiment. The book turned out great except for the fact that it was backwards. I made sure to plan the layout of all the pages without taking into the account the fact that the image would be reversed. Good to know! SO the front cover says "the end" and the back of the book has a title. I drew, etched and printed the stone in one sitting (pretty sure that's frowned upon) just to get a feel for everything, pretty much knowing that something would go wrong. I get really attached to my little rejects and dummies though, so naturally, I am in love with this scribbly, backwards book.

Making more dummies...

I think I make a lot of dummies because when you embark on a print project there is absolutely no going back - at least in my mind. I want to make sure everything is the right size and make a template so that I don't have to worry about any of that once I start printing. These dummies were created by using the most simple pop up mechanics - the box layer. I created a couple versions. One has 5 layers spaced a half an inch apart, which give a really crowded, pushed to the front effect that I was actually trying to get away from. After that I created a pop up with 4 layers spaced unevenly in order to create a foreground, middleground, and background. I like that one much better.

gathering "Source Materials"

In this case, "gathering source materials" is a euphemism for procrastinating and shopping. Lately, instead of actually making anything, I have been gathering what I like to call "source material." I feel like these things will get worked in to my upcoming pieces in some way, but I can't exactly say when or where...? I have always loved vintage valentines, and it is that time of year. I think I like them because they are overly cute and retro looking. Plus, the curly headed boys and girls look like they are a hop and a jump away from being evil... I'm intrigued. I also picked up this true vintage drawing book. I love the illustrations and this pony is really funny to me. He has a glint in his eye and chubby cheeks. I like both those things. They inspire me.

I truly want to make something but nothing is tickling my fancy, so to speak. I think I'm getting there though.

I did this print to get back into the swing of things, and I ended up submitting it for an exchange portfolio between CU and the University of Oklahoma. Exchanges are god's gift to printmakers - a win win all around. You get great prints and you also put your prints out into the world and see where they land. Pretty exciting stuff. The print I submitted is black and white, but I am going to go back in a silkscreen some two colors into the background and then do the relief over that. This is a good exercise for me to improve my technical skill. Sometimes I just don't have the patience to do these things, but that is something I need to work on. I think it would really add so much more to my pieces if I incorporated other processes and worked on layering... hmmmm... good thing I'm in grad school.

This is the exchange print.... And this is the beginnings of the excruciating (I'm being dramatic) process of layering up the colors. It's actually simple, I'm just hemming and hawing. And please excuse the bad photo - it's hard to take pictures of shiny things!

A couple days ago I learned how to use a scanner.

of little figures that I have been creating for cards. The

figures have been a good exercise for me - I just draw,

because after drawing and painting them I got unusually

This is an inside joke with myself and it's actually not that funny...

Just cleaning today and accomplishing nothing. My poor silkscreen is "clean" but I'm pretty sure it is not supposed to look like this. We have an abusive relationship. I abuse it. I'm also trying to clean one of my relief rollers. I left ink on it, knowing that was bad, and then let it sit for about 2 months because I knew what a pain it would be to clean and now I'm trying to clean it. I am not going to throw it away - I will not let the roller win. Maybe I'll remember this the next time I even think about leaving a mess. Probably not.

I am having so much fun using watercolors. I haven't used watercolors since back in the day when I had the yellow crayola set with the plastic brush. I think I had something against them until recently when I went and saw the Tim Burton exhibit at MOMA. He had some of the most amazing and beautiful watercolors I have ever seen - I would KILL to have one. Just kidding! (Not really) He uses all these bright candy colors - they look good enough to eat. I just went on the exhibition web site and it actually shows a lot of the paintings. Worth looking at!!! Understatement of the century. He has the best imagination.

Recently, I have been very inspired by another blog, Non-Indigenous Woman, by artist Kathryn Polk http://non-indigenouswoman.blogspot.com/. She is making a heroic effort to post something everyday, and I think I may try to do the same. More for my benefit than for the benefit of anyone reading this blog. I like her blog for so many reasons, and I look forward to reading it. Sometimes I miss a couple days, but that's even better because then I have a stockpile of like 3 posts to read. It's like Christmas!!! But seriously, I like her blog for another reason - because it is reveals the somewhat mundane aspects of being an artist. I mean that with no disrespect as she is obviously an amazing and talented artist, but she is also a normal person! I like that. She takes some of the mystery out of being an artist.

Well, I've made two blog posts today... does that mean I don't have to do one tomorrow? :)

mock ups are fun!

I'm trying to work through some issues on a new book that I want to make, but I'm having a hard time. Too many ideas I think. I'm caught somewhere between the idea of a diorama and a pop up book. I DO really love this little mock up, although I am no closer to figuring out how to make this thing work. I'm struggling with the layering of the images. I like the fact that there is so much going on in this tiny space, but so many of the figures over shadow one another. Maybe I just need to keep making these until I come up with something amazing...? In that case, I might be making them forever! Eek.

Sometimes I find myself in sticky situations - not really bad or anything, but situations that would definitely worry my parents just because they worry on an abnormal scary parent level that I cannot comprehend. This print is about dishonesty and the nuances of being dishonest. There is a grey area. I don't think of myself as a dishonest person, and I don't think that lying to reassure someone is bad... hmmmm... My questionable morals aside, I made this print as a light hearted exploration of these questions.

This was my first time printing on muslin. A bit tricky, but I could definitely get used to it. For one thing, I prefer printing by hand and for another, muslin is less expensive. I think I also like it because it is more portable and because I have a hard time keeping paper flat and unblemished.
